A Toshiba Libretto, the small laptop of the late 1990s, ran Windows on one side and Linux on the other, and its disk was copied whole onto later machines. Among preprint downloads, course material and correspondence it kept a drawer of my own writing: essays on folklore and the history of ideas, short fiction and a few poems, letters to the press, notes on physics that never became papers, and the interviews for a book on the beginnings of computing and the Internet in Aragón. They are published here as they were left, one page each, with the date inferred from the content when the file gives none; the file dates themselves were lost in a 2008 copy. Most belong to 1996–2003, the years between the department at Zaragoza, Telefónica I+D in Madrid and the Teruel school.

Withheld, and listed only in the private notes: the CVs and job applications of 1997–1998, letters to named people, personal correspondence, exam papers, drafts of papers that were later published (they are on the publications page), and texts whose author was someone else. Seventeen further texts wait for a second look because they name colleagues, discuss institutions or may overlap with essays already on this site.
